Β» when baldr discovers her dalliance, he tries to kill james by shoving the latter out a tower window. james survives, but the fall shatters his left arm. baldr passes him off as dead and ships him out to the wall.
Β» though still grieving james' death, she marries baldr when she learns she's pregnant to protect her child. after the wedding, she and baldr move to dragonstone, where he bonds with a dragon, hringhorni, and she gives birth to a son. having gotten a dragon and an heir, baldr later drops the farce and has her imprisoned.
Β» her family's allies, led by rygi, break her out of her prison. from them she learns that her house has been compromised: fenris has been sworn into the kingsguard to force him out the line of succession, jormungandr has been sent away to marry, and, as the new hand of the king, odin rules on loki's behalfβthe latter forced to comply by the threat of blackmail. they intend to head north to sway the allegiance of baldr's younger twin brother, hodr, who has become the lord of winterfell.
Β» in winterfell, hodr attempts to win her affections (fully aware his twin has no interest in her, only the throne and having an heir), and while she seems to be receptive to the idea of an alliance (and plays along with the flirting), she disappears in the morning, having gotten what she truly wanted: confirmation that james is alive. she disguises herself as a man and joins the night's watch as "hel," intending to reconnect with james and, together, get their son back.
